The post-holders will be responsible for the provision of occupational therapy within a Community Learning disability team to children and young people presenting with psychological distress and mental health difficulties.  

The post-holders will need to be able to work in a range of settings, including clinic settings, home visits, residential settings, and schools as well as attending meetings at different sites. As such, the ability to travel across South Staffordshire is required. The impact of working in pandemic conditions has facilitated use of digital/remote working practices and this is likely to continue where it is of benefit.

The ideal candidates will be:

Main duties of the job

Main duties of the job

  • To take responsibility for a clinical caseload of a variety of occupational needs in the area of Learning Disabilities in the South Staffordshire Children and Young Persons Community Learning Disability Team.
  • To act as an autonomous practitioner within the team with access to clinical supervision on a regular basis. This will include caseload management and decisions on how to prioritise workload and will include children and young people with complex needs.
  • To ensure that all assessments regarding mental capacity, best interests and risk assessments are completed.
  • To carry out assessments including gathering complex information from children and young people, carers and other members of the multi-disciplinary team. This may include the use of specialist standardised and non-standardised assessment tools, verbal and non-verbal communication skills and observation of the individual and their environment. It may also involve carrying out assessments jointly with other professionals.
  • To contribute to the overall care plan using effective Occupational Therapy treatment programmes and negotiate and communicate these with the children and young person, family, carers and other members of the treatment team. This will include the use of clinical reasoning and theoretical knowledge relevant to the specialism, analytical skills, and the use of verbal and non-verbal communication skills showing empathy appropriate to the needs of the situation.
