About the role: 

Our Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording Technology (HAMR) technology is a world-leading photonics technology with integrated plasmonic, waveguide and laser devices to address the cloud data storage market. Leveraging our high-tech design tools and advanced manufacturing processes you’ll be responsible for research and development in the areas of laser design and photonic integrated circuit design for emerging technologies into new products to meet specific performance and reliability requirements. You will:

  • Carry out computational modelling of photonic systems for next generation Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) read-write heads.
  • Use LaserMOD/Crosslight/Harold etc, FDTD, Lumerical Interconnect and other similar methods to simulate laser performance within the HAMR integrated photonic system.
  • Propose laser designs to provide improvements in robustness to optical feedback and laser reliability.
  • Carry out data analysis to support the conclusions made from modelling and model to measure closure assessments and improvements.
  • Make improvements to the modelling capabilities including development of new modelling methodologies.
  • Work with other R&D engineers and scientists to plan experimental builds and testing of the proposed designs.
  • Collaborate with adjacent teams and internal customers to ensure that the proposed future designs will meet the performance and reliability requirements of the future product roadmap.

About you:

You are;

  • Knowledgeable in the area of, semiconductor laser physics and laser design and photonics modelling.
  • Knowledgeable in the area of, semiconductor laser design for reliable, stable performance at high temperatures and robustness to external optical feedback.
  • A good communicator with excellent presentation and written skills. 
  • A strong team player who works effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Able to set own course in projects and make timely decisions. 
  • Motivated and excited by technology and the challenge of going beyond.
  • Able and willing to introduce own ideas and solutions for technology progression.

Your experience includes:

  • Experience in the areas of semiconductor laser design and modelling.
  • Experience in the areas of opto-electronics or photonics design and modelling or integrated circuit modelling.

You may also have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Photonics, Lasers, Optics, Opto-electronics, Physics, Materials Science, or Engineering. 
  • Academic research or industrial experience would be considered a distinct advantage.
  • Strong analytical skills and proven problem solver.
