Senior Engineer (Battery Systems) (KTP Associate)

THE PROJECT 

The University of Essex in partnership with Baruch Enterprises Limited offers an exciting opportunity to a graduate with the relevant skills and knowledge to develop a novel State of Charge and fire prevention prediction system for High Voltage Battery Management Systems.

This post is fixed term for 24 months and is based at Baruch’s offices in Enfield North London.

Please note that this position does not offer remote or hybrid working arrangements.

DUTIES OF THE POST

The duties of the post will include: 

  • Researching, exploring and understanding the latest technologies and challenges in Battery Management Systems and fire prevention.
  • Research/implementation/testing/evaluation of embedded systems to capture necessary battery datapoints, e.g. temperature, voltage, etc.
  • Researching, understanding and applying novel State of Charge estimation techniques most suitable for the batteries used in the company.
  • Developing, implementing and integrating suitable machine learning and AI module for battery health monitoring and fire prevention.
  • Working with partners and colleagues to identify state of charge estimation and fire prevention challenges and measures.
  • Contributing to the writing of academic publications and teaching materials, with an appreciation of the potential of the project to contribute to the Research Excellence Framework.
  • Knowledge embedding to colleagues and sales and marketing team.

These duties are a guide to the work that the post holder will initially be required to undertake. They may be changed from time to time to meet changing circumstances.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • A degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • An MSc in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong background in embedded systems and electronic circuits design, mathematics, signal processing, programming, and machine learning.
  • Strong background in mathematics, including linear algebra, calculus, probability, and statistics.
  • Experience with deep learning, signal processing, and artificial intelligence techniques.
  • Familiarity with software development best practices such as version control, testing, documentation.
  • Experience working with embedded systems, sensors, or control systems.
  • Understanding of data structures and algorithms.
  • Strong interest of, and experience working with, battery management systems and battery modelling.
  • Strong programming skills in C/C++/python and R, with experience in ML libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn.
  • Ability to write technical reports/papers.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to think abstractly.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
