Graduate Developer

Graduate developer, nationwide

Are you the curious one? The one that didn’t just ask why, but also how? The one with the overwhelming desire to take things apart to see how they worked? You’re in great company.  Full Fat Things are a creative bunch and we get major stuff done by building with the open source giants. We’d love to bring someone on board, someone with existing open source contributions who wants to carry on what they’ve started.

The opportunity

As a graduate developer we will help you learn, develop and thrive. With training, real projects and support from the full team, you’ll quickly find your feet. You’ll work on high profile products and services for high profile companies and your output will be used by millions of people. You’ll have real responsibility and the power to make a real impact. Along the way you’ll make open source contributions as well to make all of humanity just that little bit better!

You’ll also work with some outrageously brilliant developers who are amongst the best in their field and contribute majorly to open source communities. Our collaborative team will help you thrive - at Full Fat Things pragmatic thinking wins!

We are world leaders in building in open source. We build in many ways, including PHP, Ruby, Ruby on Rails, React, VueJS & Javascript. We also encourage developers to grow DevOps skills for our AWS deployments, so our team knows how to run the software they write. The truly great developers know a level above and below what they are building.

What you’ll do

We’re a customer focused team and the exact nature of your work will change and adapt based on the projects we deliver. That means you’re always learning on the job, and you need to be comfortable with customers, both virtually and in person.

You’ll be involved in:

  • Developing websites and applications in chosen languages and frameworks
  • Writing and designing software in a way that can be open sourced in part
  • Using source control (Git/Github) and actively participating in constant and reciprocal peer reviews
  • Working in an iterative Agile setting in all phases of the software development cycle from collating requirements through to design, development, testing and releases
  • Solving hard technical problems
  • Writing unit and integration tests
  • Working with Docker, temporary pull request environments, Devops environments and be involved in the full lifecycle of software from initial idea to long term operation
  • Collaborating with colleagues and clients alike - contributing ideas, feedback and leading initiatives, where appropriate.
  • Enjoying collaboration with customers.

Requirements

Our perfect candidate will:

  • Have, or be on course to achieve a 2:1 or higher degree in a relevant specialism such as Software Engineering or Computer Science
  • Be genuinely passionate about software development and able to share open source contributions or other online demonstrations of their skills
  • Be resourceful and tenacious, willing to train on the job, with a desire to learn and innovate
  • Have the ability to quickly grasp concepts and solve complex problems
  • Have good interpersonal, communication and time management skills
  • Have some previous work experience (not necessarily in the industry)
  • Be UK based and have the right to work in the UK
  • Be a positive person trying to move forward and enjoy life

Benefits

  • Working from home - no commute, more flexibility and a better work-life balance. No suffocating ties or pinchy shoes either!
  • Premium equipment - we make sure you have everything you need to do your job well
  • Access to training and certification
  • Career development and mentorship, working amongst some of the best open source brains in the world
  • Active encouragement to make a name for yourself in the open source community
  • Financial stuff -
    • Salary in line with your skills and experience
    • 10% employer contribution to your pension
    • Generous annual leave (25 days + Bank Holidays)
    • Optional private healthcare

Application process

Apply online or email your CV to developersdevelopersdevelopers@fullfatthings.com with a cover letter, explaining why you’re right for the role. You must include links to your open source repositories or contributions. Please note that sending us links to open source repositories that only you have contributed to is self publishing and not taking part in an open source community.

If you’re shortlisted, we’ll invite you to take our online assessment (it takes just under one hour). It’s a challenge but we know you like those. If our journey progresses, we’ll have telephone and zoom interviews. You’ll meet some of the team and get to know how we work. We’ll ask you about your skills, aspirations and approach to life, and you can ask us anything too!
