Research Assistant

Who we are

Galen Research is the leading developer of disease-specific Quality of Life (QoL) questionnaires working with global pharmaceutical companies and health researchers around the World. We develop patient reported outcome measures by understanding how a disease affects patients' QoL and then adapt them for use in different languages as required by our customers for their phase III clinical trials.

Due to a high workload, we are recruiting a Research Assistant to join the team in Manchester.

What you will be doing

Initially, you will help the research team with all aspects of project planning including proposals, ethics applications, interview scheduling, helping with language adaptations, and data management.

As you progress and understand Galen’s methodologies, you will become an active researcher in all aspects of the company’s scientific endeavours. The work is highly varied, encompassing:

  • Qualitative tasks such as interviewing and thematic analyses.
  • Working with foreign language partners to adapt questionnaires for use in other cultures.
  • Quantitative analysis including classical test methods and advanced statistical methods such as Rasch Measurement Theory.
  • Academic paper writing.

Career progression is self-paced and non-competitive with a great emphasis placed on teamwork.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for an outstanding social science graduate who can demonstrate an aptitude for learning and applying new knowledge. We do not expect you to know our business - it is highly specialised, but we do expect you to:

  • Know your subject in terms of its factual, theoretical, qualitative, and quantitative elements. We want to know you can learn, retain, and apply knowledge.
  • Have well-developed oral and written English and an aptitude for understanding other cultures. An ability to work with people who use vernacular and colloquial English is essential.
  • Excellent academic writing. You will be writing papers for peer-reviewed journals.
  • An interest in people.
  • A strong understanding of the common social science statistical tests and what the results mean. Candidates should know how to use SPSS.

The role is largely office-based in Manchester, and we operate a discretionary policy of working from home on two days per week. Home working requires a safe, private area where confidential work can be undertaken securely. International travel is required occasionally thus a valid passport is required. Successful applicants will need to pass DBS clearance.

What you will get

Salary is set for graduates at between £26,000 and £28,000 p.a., though this is negotiable for candidates who have prior relevant work experience. In addition, the company pays a discretionary tax-free annual bonus of £3,600 and operates a contribution pension plan.
