Biodiversity Apprentice

Appointment Type: Fixed Term Position 3 to 5 years.
Hours: 37
This is an exciting and challenging opportunity to help Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council address environmental challenges by taking on an important role in delivering the council’s biodiversity agenda. The role includes the ability to work from home on average 40% of working week as part of a flexible working pattern and will include office and field work.

You’ll be working within the Biodiversity Team alongside other ecologists, and closely with the Ranger Services team and Natural Environment Team. The post-holder will join a growing team of biodiversity officers supporting this high priority work area. The Council declared an Ecological Emergency in 2021, and the team’s responsibilities are growing as a result of this and the emerging Biodiversity Strategy.

The post-holder will work on supporting the team’s planning casework, monitoring of the green estate and onsite/offsite Biodiversity Net Gain, ecological data management, public engagement and other activities where necessary. They will be working closely with partners internally and externally in supporting their work and learning from them.

We are looking for a recent college or university graduate who has a good foundation of knowledge in ecology and conservation. It would be desirable if candidates had previous experience relevant to the role, knowledge of relevant legislation, policy, designated sites, ecological survey work, habitats and species. As a training role, the candidate would be expected to be committed to learning on the job and via the apprenticeship training programme. An enthusiasm and interest in biodiversity is essential.
