Software Developer / Software Engineer

We have an exciting new opportunity for a Software Developer/ Software Engineer to join the mission to revolutionise genetic science with rapid and open data sharing.

 

About the Role:

The Wellcome Sanger Institute is dedicated to swiftly providing the research community with valuable datasets by placing them in publicly accessible repositories hosted by the European Bioinformatics Institute.


As a Software developer/ engineer, you will play a crucial role in maintaining
and enhancing existing data submission pipelines, as well as developing
new pipelines when needed.


You will be responsible for:
You will maintain and enhance the current data submission pipelines. Provide swift resolutions to any errors or issues within the pipeline. Create new pipelines for submitting new data types. Support Scientific Programmes by tailoring existing data pipelines or creating new ones to accommodate their unique data submission requirements.

About You:
You are a skilled software developer with a demonstrated experience of programming in Perl and MySQL.  

About Us:
You will work as a member of the Data Submission team that is part of a broader Pipeline Solutions unit, which includes System Designers and Developers, Data Scientists, Service Management specialists.

 

Technical Skills:

Bachelor's degree or above in computer related sciences or equivalent experience

Proven experience with Perl or Python development

Proven experience with relational databases and SQL

Knowledge and experience of UNIX system

 

Competencies and Behaviours:

Excellent problem solving/analytical skills

Self- motivated and proactive with ability to manage own workloads effectively

Ability to work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders at all levels

Ability to communicate effectively about complex technical matters with both technical experts and non-specialists

Strong interpersonal and communication skills

 

Other Information:

We operate a hybrid working pattern with 2 days in the office and the rest working from home. Software developers can fulfil the majority of their roles working from home, and we are very supportive in getting the equipment and access you will need to make the best of your career at the Wellcome Sanger Institute.

Salary range: £49,072 to £56,000 (depending on skills and experience)
