DBS - Research Scientist

You may be eligible for Turing funding (up to £450 a month) in addition to this paid opportunity. Please speak to your Careers Service/Talent team for more information

DeoBioSciences ("DBS") is a small, lean, startup stage, biotech co. developing a naturally-sourced cancer drug candidate targeting multiple histotypes/tissues of metastatic stage carcinoma, near the GSU downtown campus. To-date, in vitro study data, conducted and vetted at an Ivy League university, has corroborated and met predictions for safety and performance.
DBS is seeking a skilled and motivated short-term, part-time, Research Scientist with cell/tissue culture and bioanalytical experience (flow cytometry, fluorescence assays) to join our lean team, as an independent contractor for a specific project. We offer an ultra-flexible, part-time work schedule (night and weekends available), with “full-time” pay rates and “founding employee” contingent bonus potential. This role is a unique opportunity to gain experience with an early-stage, biotech startup, without quitting your other life pursuits. Success in this project could lay the groundwork for a future, full-time, role/opportunity with a growing, ambitious biotech.

Responsibilities
Either independently or with remote/virtual senior scientist guidance and support:

  • Establish and maintain sterile, contamination-free, tissue/cell cultures from cancer cell lines and/or primary cells/tissues; expand, harvest, and bank suspension or adherent tissue/cell cultures in support of downstream processing requirements (protein isolation, purification, and analysis)
  • Analysis of apoptosis bioassays using fluorescent microscopy and/or flow cytometry
  • Perform and analyze functional assays of cell proliferation or targeted apoptosis involving human cancer cell lines.
  • Stock, prepare, and/or develop cell media, supplies, reagents, etc.
  • Optional: Execute various protein isolation, purification, and analysis protocols and techniques (e.g. Western blotting, SDS-PAGE, FPLC/HPLC), as needed
  • Maintain excellent records of experiments, production logs, inventory, and other relevant information.
  • Collect and document observations and results; periodically provide updates and present scientific findings to the team.

Min. Requirements/Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological science discipline plus >2 years of hands-on relevant experience in research/lab setting or Master’s degree plus >1+ years of experience in research/lab setting or Ph.D. (candidate or post-doc acceptable) with experience in research/lab setting.
  • Strong core competencies in mammalian cell/tissue cultures; (cancer tissue culture exp. preferred)
  • Knowledge of aseptic techniques in culturing; experience in contamination-free culturing.
  • Hands on experience with development of cell/tissue culture protocols for adherent or suspension cells
  • Competency in cell bioanalysis using flow cytometry and/or fluorescent microscopy is required;
  • Optional but desirable: Hands on experience with isolation, purification and analysis of target proteins using various techniques; (e.g. immunoblot/western blotting, SDS-PAGE (FPLC/HPLC/gravity flow chromatography skills, a major plus)
  • Well organized with attention to detail, and ability to document experimental observations and results in a timely manner.
  • Solid written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to work independently, yet collaboratively, for prolonged time periods.
