Engineering Graduate Trainee

About us:

We are Rail People. Since our founding in 1994 we have been helping to modernise and improve UK rail to meet the needs of today’s passengers. We have invested more than £1.5 billion in rolling stock and innovation projects in the last ten years to become the UK’s largest rolling stock company.

We collaborate with like-minded companies to make our trains more accessible, more comfortable and better connected. Together, we are creating an environment where people can enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

We invest in small and medium businesses who drive our innovation in new technologies. From battery and hydrogen power systems to 3D printed parts and high-definition cameras. Our long-term outlook means we support skilled jobs across the sector and across the whole country.

We will continue to reimagine our investments, to work with the talented people in our industry and to engineer a brighter, greener, more cost-effective future for UK Rail.

Angel Trains. Rail People, Real Expertise.

About the role:

Due to ongoing business growth, and a desire to increase the number of early careers roles available with the rail sector, we are looking for two self-motivated and technically minded engineering graduates to join us from September 2024.

The successful candidates will enrol on our intensive 2-year training and development scheme. The scheme consists of a number of placements both internally across the business as well as externally with rail operators, maintainers, suppliers & consultancies. Successful completion of the scheme will lead to an engineering role within the business.

Our scheme is accredited by both the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Throughout the two years you will be supported by a fully qualified mentor within the business, who will help guide your pathway towards professional registration and accreditation as a Chartered Engineer.

Key Responsibilities:

Due to the nature of the scheme objectives and responsibilities will vary considerably between all placements. Each placement is specifically tailored to meet the unique requirements of individual graduates. Clear responsibilities are outlined before the commencement of each placement, aligning with various competency requirements defined by the IMechE and IET. Having run our graduate scheme for over twenty years we have built solid relationships with our partner organisations across the industry; and you will be well supported throughout the two years.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • A graduate or graduating in 2024 with a IMechE or IET accredited MEng in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. (Other disciplines may be considered provided they are accredited).
  • Student membership of the IMechE or IET.
  • Strong aptitude for solving technical problems.
  • Flexible, innovative and agile approaches to problem solving, with a positive ‘can do’ attitude.
  • Desire to take responsibility for personal and professional development.
