System Administrator & Software Developer

About the role

 

Join our prestigious team at the Wellcome Sanger Institute as a Systems Administrator & Software Developer or Senior Systems Administrator & Software Developer. 

 

As part of our mission, you'll create reproducible software environments, manage resources efficiently, and harness the power of the cloud. You'll start by focusing on software environment creation, mastering Spack recipes, and ensuring seamless automation for researchers.

This dynamic role offers a mix of independent work and team collaboration, directly engaging with scientific researchers. Whether you're a recent graduate or an experienced professional, we welcome your fresh perspectives and substantial Linux system administration experience.

Essential skills:

Containerisation technologies (Docker, Singularity)

Compiling and installing software on Linux systems and bash scripting

Coding proficiency in any language, with a willingness to learn Python and Go

Familiarity with modern software development tools and practices, including CI/CD pipelines and agile methodologies

Excellent communication and problem-solving skills

Customer-focused mindset

 

For Senior role applicants, more extensive skills in compiling and installing software on Linux systems, bash scripting, using provisioning frameworks like Terraform and Ansible, and a deep understanding of Linux-based systems are required.

 

You’ll also have exposure to massive data scales: think petabytes of data. Not to mention use tools such as Singularity, Github/Gitlab CI, Terraform/Ansible, and Spack regularly.

Additional Information:

Salary range: £33,155 - £39,387, for System Administrator & Software Developer; Senior role salary range is £44,890 - £53,330, dependent on skills and experience.
