Job Summary:

The FM Global Renewables Unit is looking for a Senior Renewable Energy Construction Underwriter to join our international team servicing a global book of renewable energy clients. The Renewable Energy Construction Underwriter must have a strong understanding of exposures and risk transfer strategies unique to ground mounted PV Solar, Onshore Wind, and Battery Energy Storage System construction projects. The Underwriter will have curiosity, drive, and strong relationship management skills to effectively underwrite a profitable renewable energy construction portfolio while supporting both client and company loss prevention and risk transfer objectives.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Perform construction underwriting and insurance servicing activities on existing and prospective accounts with large projects in the renewable energy space, focusing on photovoltaic solar, onshore wind, and battery energy storage systems. This includes, but is not limited to, line setting, managing reinsurance needs and placement, rating and pricing, terms and conditions, value analysis, certificates of insurance, preparation of quotations, assisting in proposal development.
  • Provide underwriting assistance and guidance to Account Managers in handling smaller construction projects, as needed.
  • Provide construction underwriting expertise and guidance to the renewable energy team and broader organization, recommending new or modified guidance when warranted.
  • Collaborate with the Renewable Underwriting Manager and Staff Underwriting on the development and expansion of renewable construction underwriting strategy, organizational development, and coaching. 
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with key clients, brokers, and internal stakeholders. 
  • Leverage external and internal relationships to understand clients' exposures, operating strategies, and business goals, and ensures mutually agreed project plans meet the long-term loss prevention, underwriting, and risk transfer goals of both the client and FM Global. 
  • Stay abreast of renewable energy and insurance market trends, and broader portfolio performance. Including competitor offerings, strengths and weaknesses, profitability, emerging trends, etc. 
  • Learn and leverage internal systems, applications, procedures, and authority levels.
  • Maintain complete and up-to-date documentation of decision making and key documents within internal systems as appropriate. 

 

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in construction underwriting, with a primary focus on large utility scale renewable energy projects including ground mounted PV Solar, Onshore Wind and Battery Energy Storage Systems. 
  • A proven track record in underwriting, risk assessment and use of authority to profitably manage your own book of large utility scale renewable energy projects.
  • A deep understanding of the principles and practices of construction underwriting, risk assessment and risk mitigation, specifically for renewable energy projects.
  • Ability to lead negotiations and communicate complex underwriting information clearly to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to make independent decisions based on accurate and timely analyses.
  • Maintains and develops market knowledge including competitor profiles and products.
  • Curious and driven to learn about new technologies, market practices, and trends.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, computer skills and attention to detail is required.

Associateship of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII) or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation would be an advantage.
