Graduate Electricity Trader - STEM backgrounds encouraged

As we decarbonise, the energy system is changing rapidly. At Volcore, our team of wholesale electricity traders and technical experts work together to make real-time decisions that keep the electricity system stable and support increasing renewable generation. We are profitable, growing quickly and have several full-time, on-site openings for graduate traders as we expand further.

About the role:

  • Make quick, accurate, profitable trades in response to large amounts of real-time information. This role does not involve directly coding up the models and tools we use; if that is something you have aptitude and passion for, keep an eye out for openings within our tech team.
  • Propose new strategies and trading tools and collaborate with the wider team as they are implemented.
  • Uphold the integrity of the markets, comply with internal and external policies and regulations.
  • Power markets trade 7 days a week, so our team work a rotating shift pattern from our Manchester office. Each trader will typically work 5 days a week, of which one day will be a weekend day (on average). Currently our trading roster covers 6am-11pm, although individual shifts are only 8-10 hours and we aim to avoid back-to-back evenings and mornings.

Benefits of working with us:

  • Uncapped growth potential: We allocate capital and risk rapidly based on merit, not tenure. New hires contribute from day one, rather than having to navigate large-organisation bureaucracy.
  • Learn from the best: We provide formal and informal training to become a highly skilled energy trader. Our curriculum covers topics including fundamentals of the power system, wholesale energy markets, risk & compliance and the art of making trading decisions.
  • Taking on the too-hard basket: We differentiate ourselves by our willingness to go deep and adopt approaches that are more nuanced and interesting than the industry norm.
  • Modern tech stack: You will work directly with the data scientists and software engineers building the tools you use daily. We pride ourselves on how quickly several improvement ideas have gone from Idea to execution.
  • Proudly Manchester-based: We aspire to be among the best employers in the North. We work quickly as a team and our roles are full-time, on-site to allow for that.

About you:

  • We don’t require energy or finance expertise - we will provide you with the training and knowledge you need. However you must be able to grasp and apply new concepts very quickly.
  • STEM background with excellent chart reading and proven ability to go beyond theory and apply maths, probability, logical reasoning and problem solving in real-world contexts.
  • Quick, clear decision-making in practical, high-stakes situations. Experience in sports betting/poker, FX, stock trading or other markets is advantageous but not a requirement, including in a personal capacity.
  • Clean criminal record. - By the time this role commences, be eligible to live and work full-time in the UK. For the right candidates, we can consider visa sponsorship after at least 12 months of employment, as long as this is made transparent at the time of application.

Notably, we don’t rely on specific qualifications or years of experience to demonstrate these. Instead, we’re more interested in work or projects you’ve done and discussing what you learned from them. You should be honest about your strengths and weaknesses, and how we can best work with them.

Thank you for reading this far. We look forward to hearing from you.
