About the Role

Join the Forensic Investigation Team at TRL as an Injury Causation/Biomechanics Specialist, conducting forensic investigations of road collisions and other incidents.

The successful candidate can be based UK wide. Flexible working options for full or part-time employment available.

Key Duties / Responsibilities

  • Undertake in-depth investigations of injurious incidents – primarily vehicle collisions and also falls from height, falling objects and other circumstances.
  • Review evidence (e.g., photographs, witness statements, police reports, medical records), identify regulations and apply relevant research findings to reach logical conclusions.
  • Design and conduct testing through physical means or computational simulation.
  • Produce balanced, independent reports for our wide variety of public and private clients including police forces, public bodies, road authorities, insurers, private companies and solicitors, in both Civil and Criminal proceedings.
  • Present evidence in both Civil and Criminal Courts.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with clients across the industry.

Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Degree in biomechanics/biomedical engineering or mechanical engineering with a specialty in biomechanics or extensive industry experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of anatomy/physiology and key principles of injury/impact biomechanics especially with emphasis on automotive applications.
  • Qualifications or relevant experience in the field of collision investigation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; in particular, able to explain technical information accurately and confidently to both technical and lay audiences.
  • Be flexible with working throughout the UK and potentially with out of hours working, as each case dictates.
  • Presenting evidence in Court.
  • Full UK Driving Licence

Desirable:

  • PhD in biomechanics/biomedical engineering.
  • Experience of applying broader biomechanical knowledge to analysing specific incidents.
  • Experience of presenting evidence in both Civil and Criminal Courts.
  • Experience in reviewing others’ technical work/research and an ability to provide constructive feedback on improvements and development areas.
  • Experience in helmet/seatbelt usage and related injury causation investigations.
