Graduate Design Engineer

Job Title: Graduate Design Engineer 

Reporting to: Chief Designer

Department: Technical

Location: UK – Erdington, Birmingham

Working Hours: 37.5 Hours per week

Supervisory Responsibility: N/A

 

Job Purpose: 

As a member of our technical team, you will support the design and development of new and improved products for the civil and military aerospace sectors, from initial concept to release to serial production. To support and enable the design of tyres capable of achieving the required performance and manufacturability standards, for current and future aircraft.

This will require the development and analysis of product standards to complete definition of the broader design requirements. To address these requirements will necessitate the development of new and continuously improving tools, processes and in pursuit of an ever-increasing analytical approach.

Main Duties & Responsibilities: 

The main objective of this role is to assist with the ongoing operation of tyre design, analysis, materials development and in-service support.

In this role, you will make an impact by undertaking a number of focused development projects, varied on length of placement. 

WITHIN DESIGN

  • Develop and implement improvements in Product Data Management practices, to enable greater visibility and to leverage greater value from design data.
  • Contributing to the development of new toolsets and procedures for design definition and performance analysis. 
  • Development of design definition, not limited to: 
    • Green and cured tyre geometry
    • Construction and release of initial tyre specifications
    • Process control and tolerance constraints
    • Output of tyre design parameters for tolling design
  • Coordination of a successful tyre qualification, ensuring appropriate engagement of customer and regulatory oversight.
  • Supporting approval activities like Prototypes tyre buildings, Retread Escalations and NPI gated processes. 
  • Requesting and supporting with relevant testing on aircraft tyres and coordinating with Test house team. 
  • Develop and recommend improvements to the format and control of design data within the manufacturing specification.
  • Support for the development and implementation of future tyre technology such as radial tyre development, EVTOLs etc.
  • Develop and implement a parametric approach to initial tyre design, to support the rapid generation of tyre proposals.
  • Investigate and recommend improvements to strengthen and expand the link between CAD and FEA environments.
  • Develop understanding rheological and mechanical testing of materials used for the manufacture of aircraft tyres.
  • Supporting Materials Development Engineers on ongoing material development projects for new products and product improvement.
  • Developing understanding on Material characterisation testing such as FTIR, TGA & DMA and reverse engineering.
  • Beyond undertaking one or more the above projects, you will support the daily activates of a highly active development team spread across the UK and USA as they develop new and retreaded tyres for fitment to various aircraft ranging from Airbus, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Leonardo and many more.
  • Collaborative working with different function groups such Process engineering, Supply chain, Technical services, Material Development, Operations, Sales & Procurements.

Principle Measurable's:

  • RFT > 90% (measured through the development phase) 
  • OTIF > 95%
  • Project utilisation > 90%

Experience:

  • Any tyre or design or engineering industry experience will be considered as an added advantage (Not mandatory)

Qualifications: 

Must Have: Graduate degree in Aerospace or Automobile or Mechanical streams.

Should Have:  MSc in Aerospace or Automobile or Mechanical streams.

Could Have:  Engineering Industry Experience.
