Duration of Contract: Permanent

Salary: UH5 £27,181pa with potential to progress to £30,487 by annual increments

Annual Leave: 25 days plus standard public holidays and an additional 4 days including the closure of our office between Christmas and New Year.

The School of Physics Engineering & Computer Science (SPECS) is seeking to appoint a Senior Technical Officer into an exciting technical role. SPECS is in a thrilling period of expansion with an imminent new £100M Building "SPECTRA" and a multimillion-pound research grant. We offer a wide range of degrees including Physics, Robotics & AI, Computer Science, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Automotive Engineering, and Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and in terms of size for those disciplines, we are the Number 1 HEI in the UK. Whilst the role will primarily support activities in the manufacturing facilities, you will also have the opportunity to support other areas of the School. This dynamic position will cover the manufacturing area with the potential to utilise your talent to make it your own.

Main duties and responsibilities:

As a Senior Technical Officer in the Manufacturing area, your primary responsibility will be to support the operation and maintenance of advanced manufacturing machinery, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and regulatory requirements. Your duties will include preparing materials and equipment for practical sessions, supporting both CNC and manual machining operations. You will be responsible for implementing and monitoring rigorous safety measures and assisting researchers and students in conducting their work effectively and safely. Additionally, your role will be to maintain a clean and organised workspace and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions or operational issues.

Skills and experience required:

You will have professional experience in operating and maintaining manufacturing facilities or workshops, including both CNC and manual machining operations. You should be proficient in programming mills and lathes, setting tools, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches, as well as performing calculations using basic math, geometry, and trigonometry, and proving part programs. Proficiency in reading drawings and specifications with an understanding of geometric tolerances and dimensions, and knowledge of manufacturing materials and their properties are essential. Experience using precision measuring instruments such as callipers, depth gauges, indicators, and CMM is necessary.

You must demonstrate accuracy, neatness, and safe practice, including good time management. They should understand tool holders, cutting tools, boring bars, fixtures, and inserts for CNC and manual machinery. Good communication and interpersonal skills, a client-oriented approach, and the ability to demonstrate and train others are essential. Attention to detail, the ability to follow instructions, prioritise, organise workload, and work under pressure to meet tight deadlines are crucial.

 

 

Qualifications required:

You will hold a minimum of A-levels or equivalent qualifications or have equivalent proven experience. A recognised qualification in an appropriate subject at degree or HNC/HND level or equivalent is desirable.
