Digital Signal Processing Engineer (KTP Associate)

 

Post Title: Digital Signal Processing Engineer (KTP Associate)

FTE: 1 (working 37.5 hours per week) 

Duration of Contract: Fixed term for 32 months

Salary: Between £30,000 and £39,000 depending on skills and experience.

Annual Leave: 25 days per year (plus national holidays)

Location: College Lane, Hatfield, and Tsien (UK) Limited, Zion Building, Park St, Chatteris PE16 6AE

 

Due to the structure of KTP funding, appointees will be able to commence employment only after confirmation of their having UK right to work that covers the entirety of the project.

 

About the programme:This position forms part of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership programme (KTP) funded by Innovate UK (IUK). A KTP is a 3-way collaboration between a graduate (or post-graduate), a business (or not for profit organisation) and a university or research institution.  KTPs are designed to deliver an innovation project and bring about lasting, transformative change. As a KTP Associate, you will lead the project with full support from company and academic supervisors, while benefiting from expert coaching and mentoring with one of IUK’s highly experienced Advisers.   

 

The University of Hertfordshire wish to recruit a dynamic, highly skilled & qualified graduate to lead and deliver a project with Tsien (UK) Limited (trading under the brand name of Kestrel Radar Sensors), a manufacturer and designer of vehicle speed detection, traffic counting and roadside digital display products. This project will develop advanced radar algorithms and systems to monitor complex road junctions, intersections, urban roads and highways to make them safer and smarter.  

The KTP includes access to management skills training delivered by Ashorne Hill, in addition to a £5,000 training budget.  Tsien (UK) Limited offer flexible start/end times, up to 2 days remote working per week (subject to workload requirements) after 12 months service, and salary sacrifice options will also be considered.

Main duties and responsibilities

Tsien are looking for a Digital Signal Processing Engineer to join their team based in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire. You will be responsible for spearheading research and development work on innovative signal processing algorithms and radar systems for implementation within the company.

 

You will develop and implement the radar sensing algorithms through both simulation and hardware-based demonstration, to contribute on the commercial product design and development of the company, as well as work with academic team members on peer reviewed papers and presentations. You will be expected to disseminate the results and outputs of the project and ensure the collating and writing of final project are of a high standard, which ensures the capabilities you have developed are embedded within the business. You will take an active part in the academic life of the school through participation in seminars and other similar events.

 

Skill and experience required

You will be methodical, have good attention to detail, able to work to deadlines as a team and independently, as well as be able to handle sensitive material with strict confidence. 

Experience using MATLAB/LABVIEW or other tools relevant for evaluating and employing digital signal processing techniques. Your experience must be backed by a strong theoretical knowledge and practical skills (e.g., hardware-based demonstration). 

Experience in Radar sensing and MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) system architecture would be of huge benefit. An awareness of programming in C++, C and Python would be desirable.

Practical experience of gathering and analysing complex datasets from lab and field tests would be beneficial.

The candidate must have a strong engineering approach to problem solving and be able to demonstrate both resilience and proactivity when working independently. Any work experience from industrial placements or additional evidence of a keen interest in pursuing digital signal processing would be highly valued. 

 

Qualifications required

A minimum of an undergraduate degree in electronics engineering or equivalent qualification or closely related subject (such as Computer Science, Maths, Engineering or Physics).
