Graduate Process Safety Consultant

The role:

As a Graduate Process Safety Consultant, you will work as part of the SRM team on a wide variety of projects in the energy and technology industries. Our clients include operators, design contractors, project management firms, as well as industry regulators, both domestically and abroad. Your work will involve numerical analysis, report writing, and collaboration with colleagues and clients. Your contributions will span a range of techniques, from engineering assessments to computational fluid mechanics and software development, making a tangible impact on how our clients manage their operations.

Primarily you will support senior and principal consultants in their projects, however, no two projects are the same and you will undertake various tasks as you progress through the graduate development programme. You will be involved in innovative projects as the business continues to provide support to our clients throughout the energy transition. You will be required to:

  • Work within the field of process safety across a range of industries: do you have a passion for process safety?
  • Work with clients and members of the team to deliver on projects: are you a team player with excellent interpersonal skills?
  • Write technical reports to company and client standards: are you able to distil complicated information into a concise form that a range of stakeholders can understand and act on?
  • Become familiar with the use of ESR Technology’s software and systems: are you highly numerate and comfortable running complex software packages?

The graduate development programme:
  • You will be assigned a buddy and a graduate ambassador, who will support you through the graduate development process
  • You will work towards four milestones over a period of approximately two years
  • You will attend internal training programmes delivered by industry leaders
  • Throughout the programme you will have the opportunity to learn process safety and reliability assessment techniques, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), software development and commercial skills through a wide variety of projects
  • You will have the option to specialise in any of these areas to further develop your skills
  • Upon successful completion of the programme, you will be promoted to a consultant, highlighting your progress

Key responsibilities:
  • Participate in hazard identification studies and risk assessments
  • Assist in the development and review of safety management systems
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of emergency response plans
  • Analyse process safety data and provide insights for continuous improvement
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and implement solutions
  • Conduct site visits to assess and verify safety measures
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations for clients and regulatory authorities
  • Stay updated on industry standards and regulations related to major hazard management

Qualifications and skills required:

A first class or 2.1 degree in Chemical Engineering, Physics or a related discipline is preferred. To be considered for our programme, you will need to be self-motivated, able to prioritise work and learn quickly from working alongside experienced colleagues. It is essential that you have:
  • Good problem-solving skills and be highly numerate
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Technical report writing ability
  • The ability to work reliably as a team player
  • Flexible and willing to travel to different locations within the UK and internationally

Although not essential the following would be of benefit:
  • An understanding of risk assessment techniques
  • An understanding of Computational Fluid Dynamics
  • Excel skills, Visual Basic and C++ experience
  • A commercial/business focus
  • Associate membership of a professional institution with aspirations for professional membership
