West Midlands Police, Detective Constable – Degree Holder Entry Programme – DCDHEP

The role of Detective Constable is similar to a Police Constable with different operational responsibilities dealing with more complex investigations. As a Detective you could find yourself working in various departments from the Public Protection Unit (PPU), Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), Homicide and Regional Organised Crime Unit (ROCU). No two cases or days are the same working as a Detective. Once qualified and accredited you can specialise in specific areas including Counter Terrorism, Serious and Organised Crime, Fraud and County Lines.

Being a Detective is a demanding and fast paced role, but the job also comes with huge rewards and job satisfaction. We are looking for individuals who have the curiosity and drive to follow every lead and ultimately discover the truth behind every situation.

As a Detective, you'll play a vital role in ensuring that the communities of the West Midlands are kept safe. It isn’t easy but it is rewarding and can be a career like no other. We want people to join us who have a range of life experiences and backgrounds; it is vitally important that we represent all of the communities that we serve.

During your training as an officer you will also earn a graduate diploma in Professional Policing Practice, and a Detective accreditation, which will be recognised internationally. You will obtain specialist interview training and a comprehensive Detective training package in your second year to help tailor your detective career pathway.

Your formal training will take place alongside your practical work in one of our many policing teams across the West Midlands. Lots of your learning will completed ‘on the job’ and digitally, with your face-to-face classroom style learning based in Birmingham; there’s no need to travel to Staffordshire University’s campus. As you’re completing a level 6 qualification there is an expectation that some learning will be completed in your own time. When you’re not studying you’ll be working alongside your colleagues in a variety of investigations teams helping to solve some of the most serious crimes and catch those responsible.

The Detective Constable Degree Holder Entry Programme (DCDHEP) is the right route for you if you have a degree (or higher qualification such as a Post Graduate Diploma, Masters, PhD) and you have a particular interest in working in a detective role.

With a starting salary of £25,269 for the DHEP and a fully funded qualification. Assuming satisfactory performance, your salary will rise to £26,682 in your second year and £27,804 in your third. This increases each year, and within seven years of service you can expect to be earning around £41,130. Plus there is a large variety of benefits, staff associations, social clubs and a pension to consider.
