Graduate Delivery Optimisation Engineer (NSO) - Electricity Transmission

Our Electricity Transmission (ET) directorate owns and operates the high voltage electricity transmission system across England and Wales, which consists of over 14,000km of circuit (400kV and 275kV), nearly 800 supergrid transformers and 340 substations.

Network Strategy & Operations (NSO) Delivery Optimisation is responsible for creating the tactical and strategic plan of work for Electricity Transmission. From 10 years ahead to year ahead we create a deliverable plan of work – which is then handed over to be delivered at the start of the new financial year.

We’re also responsible for the portfolio management and change control of the asset health plan. This constitutes nearly 10,000 interventions in this regulatory period and requires high levels of teamwork and collaboration across all areas of the business. These teams are also responsible for the performance reporting of our plan, and the Asset Health aspects of the annual Regulatory Reporting Pack.

Our 18-month Graduate Development Programme is split over three placements, each lasting six months, and during your Delivery Optimisation placement you’ll be split across two areas within DO. You’ll initially work within the Portfolio Management & Change Control Team, giving you the chance to collaborate with other teams and agree/challenge changes to the business plan. This will include ensuring that there are robust high-quality justification reports for changes – with any trade-offs required presented at Exec level.

You will then spend time with the optimisation teams, working within a geographic region building the plan of work that will get delivered to help National Grid meet its commitments and targets. This will require high levels of collaboration across all the delivery vehicles, and some operational site visits.

Where you spend your other two placements will be largely up to you and where your interests lie – as well as business need. You will be supported in networking with other business areas to secure projects which will build on your existing skills and teach you new ones, as well as developing your understanding of the wider business and providing value to your chosen team or department.

On completion of the graduate programme, you could be placed in any of the teams within Network Strategy & Operations , and your permanent post-programme role will depend on business need and availability. We will however do our very best to take your preferences into account; wherever you end up we will provide an exciting and rewarding future.
