Graduate Power System Engineer - Electricity System Operator (ESO)

Have you ever wondered how we keep the electricity flowing and the lights on for all electricity consumers in Great Britain? If so, you could play a key role in this by joining the Electricity System Operator as a Graduate Power System Engineer and be part of the core team that is working to operate a carbon free electricity system by 2025!

As a Graduate Power System Operator within an operation team, you’ll be working close to the control rooms through analysing real-time system behaviour, simulating network issues and ensuring the control room have the tools and processes they need to maintain network security and the balance of supply and demand.

Within a planning team, you’ll find yourself defining the long-term strategy for our energy industry by simulating long term network behaviour, assessing net zero scenarios, and helping design the network of tomorrow.

In this role, you’ll work on include assessing how our networks should be upgraded and expanded; developing algorithms to work out energy demand for next week; assessing worst case network faults so we can maintain our security standards; integrating new tools into our control rooms so staff can manage complex scenarios, such as the increasing amounts of renewable energy connecting to the network; and work with all GB transmission owners to ensure our network simulation models are up-to-date and accurate.

This role is based at Wokingham or Warwick with flexible, hybrid working.

You’ll demonstrate understanding of the fundamentals of power system operation and have skills and experience in using programming languages and operational research techniques that will allow a step change in the type and level of analysis we complete. A good level of ability in producing written reports and presentations would be beneficial.
