About the British Heart Foundation

Since we were founded in 1961, the number of deaths in the UK from coronary heart disease each year has more than halved. But we still have so much to do. We fund research into all forms of heart disease, discovering molecules in the lab, harnessing the power of big data, funding impactful clinical trials to improve the presentation, detection, and treatment of these diseases.
Our people are at the heart of everything we do. By funding research across six decades, we’ve helped keep millions of hearts beating and millions of families together. We’re investing in ground-breaking research that will get us closer than ever to a world free from the fear of heart and circulatory diseases.

About the Programme

This is a permanent role with the first 36-months being a graduate development programme where you will have the opportunity to have exposure to various teams. This Scheme is connected to an ACA professional accounting qualification.
As part of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Finance graduate programme, you’ll join a large team of c.70 staff, providing a variety of functions including financial accounting and control, business partnering, financial reporting and finance systems.
Your initial focus will be decided nearer the time based on need but will most likely be located in either the business partnering or financial accounting teams. Over the next three years you’ll have the opportunity to rotate to another team (or teams), spending time working across different functions and responsibilities, with the aim of providing you with broad exposure to as many aspects of finance as possible. Working closely with finance business partners and colleagues in Financial Accounting and Control, as well as finance analysts around the BHF you’ll develop an understanding of the core finance functions. You’ll also learn how to collaborate with, support and advise colleagues in other parts of the organisation. This graduate scheme is designed to provide exposure to both technical accounting and business finance processes, while complementing study towards a professional (post-graduate) qualification. The three-year programme is intended to support you to qualify as an Associate Chartered Accountant by studying towards the ICAEW qualification.

What We Look For

  • We are seeking recent graduates from any degree discipline with at least a 2:2 grade.
  • A genuine connection to the mission and purpose of the BHF
  • Good narrative and report writing skills, to share insight and information to colleagues and Department Leads
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, able to liaise with colleagues at different levels, adapting style to suit the audience
  • Ability to prioritise competing tasks and occasionally manage a challenging workload
  • Able to manage a diverse workload alongside studying for an accounting qualification
  • Basic Microsoft Excel skills knowledge to support in preparing analysis and financial tables

What We Offer You

  • The chance to make a difference - You’ll be joining 4,000 colleagues across our organisation helping to fund lifesaving research, and you’ll work alongside passionate people, many of whom will have a connection to our cause.
  • Responsibilities from day one – you’ll be performing an important role in our large and busy finance team. As your career develops you will gain exposure to other areas of finance which will support your studying and development
  • Continuous coaching and learning – you’ll study towards the ICAEW qualification through attending courses with Kaplan (our external professional training provider). A variety of course formats are offered to support different study approaches. You will be assisted by a talent coach at Kaplan, the student support function at the ICAEW, as well as day-to-day mentoring from your manager.
  • During the three-year programme, we will rotate you across at least one other finance function as opportunities arise, taking on more responsibility as your career develops.
  • Hybrid work arrangements meaning you can work from both home and the office allowing you to balance career, home life and study
  • Opportunities to get involved in many other aspects of BHF life, including fundraising, lab visits, volunteering in our shops or at our BHF events and engaging with a variety of different staff-led activities.

Working Arrangements

This is a blended role, where your work will be dual located between your home and 1-2 days per week in our London Office.
The use of our office spaces is driven in part by your role and the activities you need to do. This may vary from time to time, so you must be prepared to work in a flexible way to unlock your best work for our cause. Most of our colleagues on blended contracts can expect to spend some time in their office each week, on average.
Excited by the role, but want to discuss options? You may need a little more help balancing your work and home life, so please feel free to explore the flexibility you may need with us at the application or interview stage.

Overview of the Recruitment process

To apply please complete the online application. You'll need to fill in an online form, upload your CV, and answer three questions.
For those successful following the first stage interview screening, there will be a half day assessment centre in our London Office, with full details provided in advance. It’s also a great opportunity to see where we work. These assessment centres will take place in March and April 2023.
EmployAbility will work with you to provide any adjustments that you might need during the recruitment process and in the workplace, should you be successful.
