Industrial Placement: Project Development Engineer - Electricity Transmission

About the role

Would you like to start your career in an ethical organisation that serves every single person in England and Wales? Then our undergraduate Industrial Placement might just be for you!

As owners of Wales and England’s electricity transmission network, we’re at the vanguard of the energy transition. We’re spending £24 billion over the next five years on sustainable energy, and are one of the FTSE’s biggest investors in the delivery of Net Zero.

As we make these kinds of moves, we’re looking for the brightest engineering undergraduates to help us.

This role is based at Warwick with flexible, hybrid working.

When you join our 12-month Industrial Placement Programme, you’ll be based in our Asset Operations department where we look after the physical assets that make electricity happen, such as overhead lines and substations. You’ll be helping maintain National Grid by designing substation equipment and investing in electrical transmission.

You’ll be contributing to big, exciting projects with real life applications. For example, you might be working on building a substation that will provide electricity for hundreds of thousands of people. Or perhaps on an under-the-sea interconnector that joins us to the European electricity grid.

You’ll get to see and experience in person all the things you read about in your textbooks. It’s a great way to put your academic theory into practice and strengthen your CV. Plus, when you’ve finished your degree, there is also the option to join our Graduate Development Programme!

“Everyone was so nice, I felt welcomed into the team from day one. It’s also a great way to get your foot in the door – a year-long interview to show what you’re made of!”
Oliver Rowell, Undergraduate

About you

You’re enthusiastic about electrical engineering and are looking for an ethical company that is actively contributing to a greener energy future. You’re committed to developing yourself, and always ready to ask questions of your colleagues in order to learn. You are also just as keen to do your own research and find out as much as you possibly can about your subject.

You are willing to work hard and able to quickly pick things up. You can give and take feedback and contribute to your team in a meaningful way. You’re not just interested in the placement, but in making the strongest possible start to an engineering career. We’re going to be investing a lot in you, so we need you to do the same and really make the most of the opportunity.

You’ll be on track to get a minimum 2.2 degree in a STEM discipline, with Engineering preferred.  You will also have a valid full UK Driving Licence 3 months prior to your start date.

What you'll get

We are proud to offer a starting salary of £20,919.

As a first step to your career in the energy industry, our Undergraduate Programmes are like no other! You’ll gain an insight into how we work at National Grid, exposure to the energy and power industry, develop hands-on experience, and understand what a career with us can offer.

You’ll receive some great rewards and benefits including 25 days’ annual leave plus statutory holidays, a buddy to support you during your placement, and a Graduate Development Programme opportunity.
