Events & Engagement Officer

  • Do you have extensive experience of organising and delivering high-profile events and other activities that engage audiences both externally and internally?
  • Do you have experience of delivering events and other engagement opportunities to the highest professional standards and both on time and on budget using a mix of live and virtual channels?
  • Do you have the confidence, understanding and ability to deal directly with senior staff including the Chair and Chief Executive?
  • Are you confident working with stakeholders and partners to secure mutually beneficial outcomes from hosted events or visits, understanding how these fit with broader sector and stakeholder relationships?
  • Can you use audience research data to evaluate the success of our engagement activity and report to senior management?

Events enable the Charity Commission to engage directly with our audiences, providing an opportunity to increase our visibility, use our voice effectively and authoritatively and enable us to add texture and depth to our key messages. They play a key role as we seek to build our engagement with the more than 169,000 charities that we regulate in England and Wales, and support our strategic objectives in line with our Communications Strategy.
The events and engagement function at the Charity Commission oversees activities including speaking engagements, conference exhibition stands, webinars & virtual events, and engagement content created in-house. They also include a regular visit programme for the Chair and CEO to charities across the country.
The Communications & Policy Directorate is at the centre of delivering the Charity Commission’s purpose and strategy. The directorate leads the organisation’s efforts to engage with charity trustees and staff, key external stakeholders and the wider public in order to ensure that charity can thrive and inspire trust so that people can improve lives and strengthen society

Job description

  • Devise and facilitate the delivery of events, visits and speaking engagements, ensuring that these meet communication objectives and engage our key audiences in a deep and measurable way
  • Manage a programme of speaker engagements, triage and process requests and ensure the right people are addressing the right audiences. Monitor and evaluate the success of each opportunity and build a programme of activity based on that information
  • Organise a programme of visits for the Chair and CEO to charities across England and Wales, and attend to facilitate these on the ground. This may require occasional overnight stays.
  • Deliver the Commission’s Annual Public Meeting and grow our impact through other events throughout the year
  • Build effective relationships across the Commission, acting as a champion for external engagement. Be a visible advocate for the Commission’s engagement strategy, making the case to colleagues on the value of external events and engagement and the impact this can have on wider relationship management with stakeholders

Person specification

Ability
  • A demonstrable understanding of what makes a successful event
  • Ability to create and deliver engaging events both live and virtually
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret and learn from performance data and evaluation
  • The ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • A passion for, and deep knowledge of, modern engagement methods
 
Experience
  • Proven track record of planning and delivering complex events, speaker opportunities, webinars and other engagement opportunities
  • Excellent influencing and negotiating skills and the proven ability to build trust quickly; particularly building effective relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience of working in a busy team in a fast-paced environment to deliver consistently high-quality outputs
  • Understanding of the best way to engage audiences and use creative ideas to drive up engagement
 
Technical
  • Familiarity with online events platforms, to provide on-the-day support where necessary
  • Ability to assess the effectiveness of events and related activity and use the results of attendee feedback, to improve engagement
  • Application of risk management principles during the management of work and when making decisions
  • Experience of government procurement and negotiating contracts with external suppliers
  • Demonstrable experience of producing high-quality visual content especially Webinar and podcasts
  • An understanding of what a regulator within the Charity Sector does
  • An understanding of the range of issues and challenges that charities may face
  • Handling data and information sensitively in accordance with the business procedures and/or law
