New Graduate - Design Engineer

This new graduate (Summer 2024 - start) role will be part of the Microchip Human Machine Interface Division (HMID) which are responsible for the development of multitouch capacitive sensing devices, known as MaxTouch. Based in Whiteley, UK the Business Unit is a centre of excellence for capacitive touch sensing.

We are seeking a Design Engineer to join our R&D team in Whiteley UK. This position will expose you to the full life cycle for new product development, from creating proof of concept for new function, requirement elicitation through design specification and implementation. The group work closely with the silicon, firmware, and application teams to develop and design touch controllers including chip design, firmware, software, mechanical sensor design & layout, providing a total capacitive touch solution to customers.

An ideal candidate will be a genuine problem solver and analytically minded.

You will be working in a small but highly skilled team, as part of a wider organization both within the Whiteley office and worldwide.

You will receive both on‑the‑job and formal training. Graduates will also join our three-month Microchip New College Graduate Program. The program allows you to be involved in learning and development sessions with other European based graduates, giving you the opportunity to develop business acumen and be involved in cross-functional teamwork.

 

Main Functions

Interact with other functional groups including silicon development, firmware, and Applications to develop the next generations of touch controllers.

Write firmware and script to test and characterize new touch controller IC.

Investigate and evaluate new sensing features.

Problem Solving—Systematically solves open-ended problems.

Ownership—Goes out of his or her way to complete a task and has relentless drive to achieve results; is independent and self-directed and takes initiative.

Teamwork—Advise on and implement innovative ideas.

Requirements/Qualifications:

Degree in Electronics Engineering, Communications Engineering or equivalent (BEng minimum)

Experience of Electronic circuit design (analogue and digital), test and debug/diagnostics

Embedded programming skill

C language

A “problem solver” who thrives on complex technical challenges.

Good standard of written and spoken English

Enthusiasm and positive work ethic

   Nice to have:

Scripting (VBA, Python or similar)

AVR or PIC microcontroller experience

Knowledge of industry standards such as Automotive SPICE™, ISO‑26262, IEC/UL‑60730
