Softwire

Software Development Intern

June - August 2023 • London, England

What I liked

I can't recommend this summer internship enough. If you are looking to go into a career in software development, this internship is a golden opportunity. We worked in an Agile team of 8 (6 devs and 2 designers), working with JavaScript/Typescript and multiple APIs on a real-life project. In addition to back-end development, we also gained a deep insight into front-end development using React. There were plenty of opportunities for collaboration: working closely with the designers, and we using Gitlab for version control. What truly set this experience apart was the exceptional support system. Each group of 6 was assigned a dedicated trainer who provided constant feedback and support. What was also amazing was that the program began with two weeks of dedicated training, establishing a strong foundation. Finally, the company culture at Softwire is outstanding - warm, friendly, and inclusive. Engaging social events, from pub nights to a trip to Flight Club and the interns' pool tournament, created an enjoyable work-life blend. I am extremely grateful to Softwire for this incredible opportunity. I leave having learned a tremendous amount in addition to many great memories and lasting connections.

What I liked

Everyone was really supportive and you never felt bad asking a question. It was really nice to work on a project that will really be used. I got to work on all sides of the project, even creating features from scratch, which helped me improve not only my coding skills, but also my organizing and communicating skills. We could give feedback and suggestions and they would actually be taken into consideration Flexible working hours A lot of social events The trainers give really valuable feedback The 2 weeks of bootcamp at the beginning of the internship are really useful, as they bring you up to speed with everything you need to be able to start working on a real project.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and speak your mind. And ask for feedback, the trainers are there to help you improve

What I liked

- Very friendly atmosphere - Lots of interns (30 in the London office) so it's easy to get settled in - Got to work on a greenfield project so we built the application from the ground up - Lots of morale events including half-day picnic, mini golf and west end theatre trips (all paid for by the company) - A culture where you take frequent breaks and don't work at your desk for 8 hours straight - Fully-stocked kitchen - Amazing lunches at cost price

What I wish was different

Advice

Make the most of everything that's going on. Go to lots of events and meet and get to know as many people as possible.

Software Developer

What I liked

I gained experience of full stack apple app development and gained experience working in a software engineering team. I also experienced client presentations and became very confident with team work and git project management

What I wish was different

The onboarding was a little intimidating as there was a lot to take in. However, support was given when it was requested and I felt confident asking for help

Advice

Go in with an open mind and be flexible to learning new ways of programming: coding in a company is very different to coding in a university project

What I liked

The company was extremely fun to work for. The work culture and general atmosphere was very friendly and relaxed. They put a lot of trust in you to do your work, and breaks during the day and a healthy work-life balance are strongly encouraged. Hardly anyone works overtime (from what I saw, although you can if you want!). The morale (social) events are frequent and very fun, with a large range of activities every week.

What I wish was different

I wish the intern groups were able to mix more. The only time intern groups were able to mix and interact with each other was during breaks and outside of work hours. Although I understand that each intern project was separate to the other intern projects, perhaps some more frequent structured knowledge-sharing sessions (or something similar) would be beneficial and also allow us to get to know other groups better.

Advice

Make the most of working at Softwire! Try out as many of the morale events as you can because they really do make work feel a bit less like just a job and something that you can look forward to! The food there is really good and very cheap for what it is. There are free drinks and free snacks to take any time, and make sure you get to lunch early if you want to play pool, table tennis or table football because they are very popular!

What I liked

Had the opportunity to work on many things I had never done, back end, front end, SQL... Having a long project with a group of six interns was very fun and much more organized than any uni project. The company culture is amazing with lots of morale events, free food, and encouragement to take breaks and be happy in general.

Software Developer Intern

What I liked

As someone with no experience developing software, the onboarding was well paced to get me up to speed in just 2 weeks. In the subsequent weeks, we covered all the skills necessary for software development, and were encouraged to try new parts of the tech stack, meaning I was able to learn about and contribute to all elements of the stack. Morale was a real highlight, with a diverse range of events planned most evenings, and some during the day too. The lunches were incredible; the in-house chefs are phenomenal!

What I wish was different

Advice

Get stuck in with morale events from day one - they're a great opportunity to get to know other people in your internship, but more importantly permanent employees of the company, whom you otherwise wouldn't interact with. These events were where I really learned what a career in software development is like.

What I liked

The experience was lovely. The office has a very nice work environment and also great people. I never felt stressed nor bored. I think we were given a lot of support in terms of work as well as wellbeing. Working in a team of interns was very nice as it helped a lot with the good old "imposter syndrome". Also it was just a lot of fun.

What I wish was different

To be honest, I would have gladly taken on a longer internship.

Advice

Take advantage of all the social events. There is something for anyone! (and free food and drinks are always nice)

What I liked

I really enjoyed my internship! There was a great balance of work on our intern project, so I never felt bored or overwhelmed. I'm proud of the work we did together, and I feel like I've learnt a lot. The intern trainers and my mentor provided a great support system, so I found it easy to ask for feedback or support. There is also a great culture/social atmosphere in the office, with activities pretty much every week.

What I wish was different

What I liked

Softwire has a very friendly and approachable environment making it easy to reach out to anyone in the company. The regular status chats with your team leader and weekly meeting with your mentor made it all feel very personalised and supportive.

What I wish was different

There were a lot of interns in the London office so it could have been nice to have more intern socialising events closer to the beginning of the internship so you meet more than just the people in your group.

Advice

Be open to learning and asking when you don't know something.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2021 • Manchester, England

What I liked

Softwire have a great work culture. The company really cares about the employees' mental health and happiness, meaning the people are always friendly. The initial training definitely helps people who have no experience in the field catch up and the tasks in it are quite enjoyable to do. The intern trainers are awesome and assist you in any way possible, including checking whether you're unhappy or burnt out. They even helped the team get involved in social events with the rest of the company employees. The athmosphere was also quite light-hearted.

What I wish was different

Advice

Connect with your intern trainers and teammates! The internship becomes even more great if you join events together and bonding will definitely make the work athmosphere that much frendlier.

Software Developer Intern

July - August 2021 • London, England

What I liked

The company has a really great culture. They use agile development very effectively which creates an environment in which developers rarely feel under pressure to produce work at a rate at which the quality of the products would suffer. The positive environment is further promoted by the investment in the office with large social areas and a large budget for 'morale' events. The work itself was great. There was a two week training course at the start of the internship which brought all of the interns up to speed to write great code once the intern projects got under way. Interns worked in teams of 6 throughout the internship, each working on their own project with a dedicated tech lead/intern trainer who provided excellent support and mentorship.

What I wish was different

The majority of interns and full-time employees seemed to be Oxbridge students/graduates which was a bit intimidating to start off with and did lead to a bit of imposter syndrome. Once I got to know everyone and got to grips with the work, the stress went away and I felt much more comfortable.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions if you're struggling. It can be an intimidating environment to start off with with interns having varying backgrounds and previous experience in the field but the environment is a really positive one for learning.

What I liked

Everyone was really friendly and the work we had was interesting too! The office space is also very nice.

What I wish was different

It would be nice if the training we got had more on non-programming things, such as using git or performing code reviews.

Advice

Even if you don't know that much about the programming language at the beginning, you learn a lot over the internship, so don't worry about not knowing enough.
